Architect / Designer Advice
FOR SINGLE NEW-BUILD DWELLINGS in Wales from 1st September 2010
At pre-planning stage, please consider the following:
It is recommended that you use the Accredited Construction Details. It is also a requirement that the Domestic Services Compliance Guide is adhered to.
Even with mains gas heating, some renewable energy sources may be required in order to meet the DER/TER reduction. It could possibly be a combination of Solar Water Heating and Heat Recovery Mechanical Ventilation
Solar Water Heating ... considerations
For effectiveness, there should be a roof slope facing South or within 30deg of South
For an average house, some 3.5 to 4 sq.m of solar panels may be required. The evacuated tube type are more efficient, and not so critical of orientation, but are more expensive (for maintenance, single tubes can be replaced however)
Hot water storage for the panels can be in conjunction with the main heating hot water cylinder (combi boilers would not normally be suitable ... although there is one make of combi boiler that can have a pre-heated feed)
Whole House Heat Recovery Ventilation ... considerations
The normally insulated rigid ducting would be positioned between floors. The joist directions must be carefully considered, or the use of ECOjoists or similar
